For most companies, work roles are not designed. These companies rely instead on loosely written job descriptions, limited training, supervisory direction, and the good intentions of workers. And the work apparently still gets done, but with undetermined inefficiencies, unnecessary problems, and lost opportunities. We have found that poor work design is at the root of a surprising number of today’s workforce problems (e.g., low productivity, dissatisfaction, disengagement, cynicism, absenteeism, and turnover.
